mca denver

One of the best things about Denver, in my opinion, is the amount of art in the city. When I went to the Denver Art Museum in November I was really impressed by their collection (hopefully I'll get to go back soon!) and since I moved here I've been to the First Friday art walk in the Santa Fe Arts District and have been back to the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.

When we went to the MCA Denver the exhibit, Another Victory Over the Sun, was up. The exhibit was primarily about illusion versus reality, expounding on the fact that our contemporary culture is often unsatisfied with what nature provides but feels the need to simulate an illusion of the real world. A good example of this would be Disney World, where most everything you see is based on reality and wants you to believe that it's reality, but is ultimately an extremely elaborate illusion. For most of history art has been defined by illusion, the idea that the two dimensional picture on the wall is not a flat surface but a window into another world. Contemporary artists have been trying to shatter the idea that art is equated to illusion, or more so have been trying to get the audience to recognize our innate desire for illusion.
